As September comes to a close, we’re reflecting on recent local and statewide accolades, while also looking forward to what’s on the horizon. As innovative industries like aerospace and aviation take off in the Mobile-Baldwin region, Alabama has increasingly been recognized as a top place to do business. In fact, in September, Area Development Magazine ranked Alabama as the sixth best state in America for doing business, based on factors like cost of business, workforce development and competitive labor environment. The Birmingham Business Journal also reported this month that there’s been a “large uptick in businesses looking to grow, raise capital or expanding through acquisition,” which is excellent news for the Alabama economy.
One of the largest forces driving Alabama’s business success is the rise in investments within innovative, competitive industries like aerospace. For example, Airbus officially opened its first U.S.-based manufacturing facility in Mobile last year. This month, the $600 million plant delivered its 10th aircraft, an A321 for Spirit Airlines. Due to the plant’s success, 87 percent of Airbus’ new employees are from the Gulf Coast region.
A number of similar success stories in innovative industries have taken place in our region recently, due in part to local and state efforts to support these businesses. For example, community leaders within Baldwin County have been at work developing the Daphne Innovation and Science Complex (DISC), an “expansive office and technology park” located in Daphne. Led by the Daphne Industrial Board, the project recently received a federal grant from the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Economic Development Administration for $846,583 to be used toward the infrastructure improvements needed to develop the office and technology park.
